Tasmanian Parliament holds surprise debate on gay-marriage

Tasmanian parliament held a surprise debate on same-sex marriage today, putting forward a bill that would recognise overseas same-sex marriages in their deed of relationships.
Similar to a civil union, this automatic recognition of overseas gay marriage does not exist anywhere else in Australia.
If it passes through the Upper House, the bill will automatically recognise same-sex [...]

HUNG: Making the best out of a bad situation

Just because I predicted that a hung parliament was the most likely outcome for this election – doesn’t mean I am happy to be right.
While in theory a hung parliament finally gives some bargaining power to the Independents and the Greens, it also gives the opportunity for the libs to publicly belittle the Labor party, [...]

Labor tries to stop overseas gay marriages

In a move that has saddened many members of the gay community Julia Gillard is firming her stance on gay marriage, by upholding legislation that would prevent Australian gay couples from marrying overseas.
“As if it’s not bad enough that the Government’s ban on same-sex marriages forces hundreds of Australians to marry overseas every year, often [...]

Mental health experts: “fighting over table crumbs”

Mental health experts are disappointed by the Federal Government’s 2010 Mental Health budget.
“They’ve left this sector to rot” says former Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Hickie,  member of the the National Advisory Council of Mental Health and Executive Director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute.
While the Commonwealth has increased funding for all other [...]

My ‘time of the month’: tales of an epileptic

Some months ago I was approached by a colleague who confided in me that his 18-month-old son had been diagnosed with epilepsy. Being an epileptic myself, I reassured him that everything will be ok, that it’s completely manageable; you know, the usual spiel. Then, as we were wrapping up the conversation, he asked,
“What if the little [...]

Redemption Story: The Olympics in the USA

It’s strange how the Olympics are making me hyper-aware of being American. From the behind-the-scenes stories of athletes in which proclamations of pride in representing the country and their hometown are made, to the sports commentators who constantly make reference to the medal count, I am constantly reminded of what it actually means to [...]

2010: The idealist’s manifesto

“Censorship reflects society’s fundamental lack of confidence in itself.  It truly is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.” – Potter Stewart U.S Supreme Court Associate Justice.
It’s been a while since I’ve written anything.
Once again I have become disillusioned to the point of lethargy and inaction with the state of this world, and the state of [...]

Four Things that made me angry in 2009 which should have made more people angry too

2009 was a year full of things that made me very angry.
The world is a terrible and unfair place. Some of the events that I found most shocking received extremely limited public attention. Obviously, not everything can be as important and exciting as Tiger Woods cheating on his wife. Below, I’ve listed four things that [...]

Calling Bullshit on Bella

I’m sorry but I’m calling bullshit on this whole pop-cultured can of beans that is the Twilight series, and the supposedly “feminist” message it epically fails to portray.
To begin with, the lead female protagonist Bella is a complete and utter bore – a blank slate, whose entire existence, thoughts, and actions revolves around her dull-as-nails, 110 year [...]

The Enemy of My Enemy

Man what a crazy few weeks it’s been. I’ve been trying to get into the frame of mind to write some sort of Climate Change related blog but before I put metaphorical pen to paper some new development happens that derails my original rant. From leaked e-mails to coalition leadership challenges to the ETS failure [...]
