Good article bloke,

Andrew Wilkie adds another factor to the mix, out of the four independents he is the most likely to not side with Liberal or Labor.

He's probably the most genuine of them all as well (not to take anything away from the others)

Good call, Myles.

If Australians expect to eat, we need to have people living where food is grown. If we expect people to live there, they should not be penalised by poor health care, poor communications, poor educational opportunities for their children.

I know doctors who have burnt out with the overwork of a rural practice but I know just as many who have moved back to "the big smoke" when their children reach high school or university age.

A proper NBN delivering affordable internet to ALL regional towns and rural areas will allow tele-medicine, tele-education, tele-commuting and tele-conferencing on a scale that will really make a difference to infrastructure demands in the big cities.

Who was the clown on Q & A a few weeks back who wanted to pump water from the Ord River to Sydney? At what energy cost, I wonder? No, let's remove our dependence on proximity to a city centre. Let's live where there is water and fewer food-miles.

I agree wholeheartedly. Neither candidate deserves to run the country. The one has played the dirtiest politics we have seen in our political system, and the other surely has no progressive and forward thinking vision to take us anywhere at all!

Seminole Cnty, FL - School Board Election Tina Calderone - a LIFELONG DEMOCRAT - becomes a Republican to run for school board. Is she turning her back on Democrats or lying to Republicans? Someone's getting lied to. WHO?

You are a member of the military - you are flown to far off countries to install democracy, you are allowed to carry weapons and depending on your level of seniority, have intelligence knowledge, launch codes, state secrets. There is a reason you ought to show identification. Why should actual citizens need to carry ID so that the brown looking ones can get identified? America has as many problems with people overstaying their visas as the ones who jump the border but I suppose it's hard to make out that white people are as much of a threat eh? As a so called member of the military, surely the "greatest country in the world" should be able to come up with enough intelligence to identify people who jump the border instead of putting the burden of proof onto your own citizens. So much for <em>"give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free</em>"... oh well never mind. Freedom was overrated anyway.

Yes, nice Claire - Australians don't do inspire very well do we (not, I think, since Whitlam, possibly Keating)? When Julia repeated the Hilary-Barack slogan "Yes we will" it just sounded silly. Mind you, while Barack did slogans well it hasn't translated into a good presidency. I'm not sure that doing slogans well is what we need though - we need leaders on the left who actually believe in something. I doubt that Kevin did, and I think Julia has had her beliefs knocked out of her in the process of breaking of the Labor glass ceiling.

On the other hand Abbott is a man of pure belief. No analysis, no study, no advice, just blind faith in the fundamentalist beliefs of church and neoconservatism. And we certainly don't want those pure beliefs running the country after Saturday.

So, a glass, or two, of red red wine, I guess, and hope like hell, as you say, for a parliament with a Green member for Melbourne holding the balance of power in the Reps (the other independents are all Nationals in disguise, so they won't help), and Greens with 7 or 8 members in the Senate. Then we'll see if Julia, or indeed the Labor Party as a whole, has a left wing bone in her body.
