Stop Internet Censorship

Posted by Claire Connelly in Media, Technology

I don’t usually post links on my blog, but I wouldn’t provide it if I didn’t think it was important.

The Federal Government is planning to force all Australian servers to filter internet traffic and block any material the Government deems ‘inappropriate’. Under the plan, the Government can add any ‘unwanted’ site to a secret blacklist.

Testing has already begun on systems that will slow our internet by up to 87%, make it more expensive, miss the vast majority of inappropriate content and accidentally block up to 1 in 12 legitimate sites. Our children deserve better protection – and that won’t be achieved by wasting millions on this deeply flawed system.

If you are as concerned about our right to freedom of information as I am; if you loathe censorship, and want the internet to remain the forum of ideals its invention facilitated, please take five minutes of your time to sign the petition.

The worst part about all of this is that K.Rudd is trying to get the job done quietly while the media is too busy talking about the financial crisis and impending recession. So reporting on this issue is almost always below the fold, usually tucked away in some corner somewhere. This is known as “taking out the trash.” Cleverly chucking in all the bad stuff at a time when things couldn’t seem any worse, that way most of it gets diffused and ignored.

Mr. Rudd has decided he wants to censor anything that doesn’t sit well with his personal taste. This is the same Prime Minister that has threatened to pull all federal fundings for the arts after the whole Bill Henson controversy. He’s trying to mold Australia to his own conservative principles, and he’s not even including the public in the process.

Please help stop Mr. Rudd from ruling with an iron fist and participate in the democracy we voted for by signing the petition.
